A former UPS employee is facing charges for allegedly stealing and reselling Apple products worth $1.3 million from a Winnipeg warehouse over six months. Orville Martirez Beltrano, who worked as a local sorting supervisor, was arrested in January 2022. Court documents reveal that Beltrano is accused of taking 866 Apple items between July 2023 and January 2024, selling them on Kijiji.
Investigations into Beltrano’s financial activities uncovered cash deposits over $232,000 made between September and January, alongside the discovery of $9,000 in cash and a MacBook in his vehicle, plus over $9,100 in jewelry. Allegations also include using the sale proceeds to buy a house in Winnipeg's South Pointe area for $630,000 and to settle a debt on a $60,000 white Audi.
Charges against Beltrano include theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and possession of the proceeds of crime. He has reportedly admitted to stealing Apple products and the jewelry during a police interview. Prosecutors are seeking to have his house, car, cash, and bank accounts seized.
This case ranks among the highest in terms of value for thefts involving Apple products, with notable past incidents including a $1.9 million theft of iPad minis at JFK airport in 2012 and over 1,000 iPads and 942 Apple Watches stolen by a Walmart distribution center worker in 2017.
