Apple has outlined the operational lifespan of third-party app stores on iPhones outside the European Union in a recent document, stating that while these stores will cease updates after 30 days of leaving the EU, the apps themselves will continue to function. As of March 7, EU customers have the option to purchase iPhone apps through third-party vendors, but there are certain limitations for both the app vendors and the users. According to a support document released by Apple, the company won't offer assistance for issues arising from third-party app marketplaces or malfunctioning apps, and raises concerns over privacy and fraudulent apps. Users leaving the EU will find that apps downloaded from third-party stores can be updated for only 30 days, yet they can still manage previously installed apps within the EU. The document reflects Apple's reluctance towards the EU's Digital Markets Act requirements, touching upon topics like app notarization, closure of third-party app stores, and permissible content in these alternative platforms. This development comes with the release of iOS 17.4, which introduces the capability to access apps from beyond the App Store, making it publicly available on Tuesday.
