In a significant update aimed at enhancing user experience, Sonos has announced a major overhaul of its controller app for iOS and Android devices. Set to debut on May 7, the redesigned app will make streaming through Sonos smart speakers simpler and more streamlined.
The update introduces a cleaner, more user-friendly home screen that eliminates previous tabs in favor of providing immediate access to recently played albums, trending libraries, and direct entry to subscribed streaming services. At the core of this redesign is a unified search bar, allowing users to effortlessly search for artists, songs, podcasts, and audiobooks across all their preferred services from a single location.
Personalization features are also front and center in the new app. Users can customize the home screen by pinning their favorite content and services for quick access. Additionally, they can rearrange and edit the display to suit their preferences, ensuring that their most-loved music and podcasts are always just a tap away.

A swipe up from the redesigned home screen reveals expanded controls for managing the Sonos home network. This includes real-time updates on what's playing on each speaker, volume adjustments, and the ability to group speakers for a synchronized playback experience across different rooms.
While the app promises a fresh and simplified interface for mobile users, Sonos also plans to phase out its macOS and Windows applications. Desktop users will need to transition to the new web experience to maintain control over their Sonos systems.
The announcement comes amid rumors of upcoming product launches by Sonos in 2024, including a new high-end amplifier and a soundbar codenamed "Lasso," as well as a "Pinewood" set-top box. Further down the line, a new subwoofer known as "Lotus" is expected to debut in 2025.
