Jessie Malone, a New York-based Peloton producer, is preparing to run a marathon in Washington, D.C., marking one year since her Apple Watch potentially saved her life by detecting atrial fibrillation—a serious heart condition she was previously unaware of. Despite being young, fit, and regularly active, Malone experienced a critical health alert while cycling home in May 2023.

Her Apple Watch vibrated intensely and displayed a warning to seek immediate medical attention as her heart rate soared to 160 beats per minute. Although she only felt slightly nauseous, the alert prompted her to stop riding and head straight to the emergency room. Upon arrival, the seriousness of her condition was quickly apparent. "Suddenly I'm surrounded by eight doctors," Malone recounted, sharing the urgency of her medical team's response.

In the ER, doctors attempted to use a defibrillator to reset her heart rhythm. When initial medications failed to stop her heart as needed, another treatment successfully reduced her heart rate to 130 beats per minute, leading to her hospitalization. Despite having no genetic predisposition or underlying heart conditions, Malone's lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep and high caffeine intake were considered potential contributors to her health scare.

Since the incident, Malone has made significant changes to her lifestyle. She has eliminated caffeine and alcohol, adjusted her diet, and made sleep a priority to regain her health. Reflecting on her experience, Malone emphasizes the importance of personal health, stating, "It is mostly about me getting myself back in a healthy way."

This upcoming marathon not only symbolizes her recovery but also highlights the advanced capabilities of wearable technology like the Apple Watch, which has included heart rhythm monitoring features since 2018. Malone's story serves as a powerful testament to the life-saving potential of health-focused technology.
