A Reprieve for Gamers
Marvel Rivals developer NetEase has announced it will reverse the controversial 100-year bans imposed on players using emulation software to run the game on unsupported platforms such as macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck.
The Issue: Anti-Cheat Misfires
The bans stemmed from the game’s anti-cheat system, which mistakenly flagged emulation attempts as cheating. Gamers running Windows emulation software like Parallels on macOS or Proton on Linux faced bans that rendered the game unplayable for a century.
NetEase's anti-cheat mechanism, designed to ensure fair play on Windows PCs, was not adapted to handle users on alternate platforms.
NetEase's Response
The issue sparked widespread outcry, prompting CodeWeavers CEO James Ramey, creator of the Crossover Windows emulation software, to directly reach out to NetEase. Following these discussions, NetEase:
- Announced plans to reverse the bans in a future update.
- Agreed to lift bans for players who notify the company until the system is patched.
Platforms Supported
Currently, Marvel Rivals is natively available on:
- Windows PCs
- Sony PlayStation 5
- Microsoft Xbox Series S and X
Players using emulation tools to access the game on macOS, Linux, or Steam Deck are encouraged to report bans directly to NetEase until permanent fixes are in place.
