macOS Sonoma 14.1The update includes new software called “ liquiddetectiond ” that can detect when the computer is exposed to liquid. The program running in this background is defined as the “ Liquid Detection and Corrosion Mitigation Program ”.
With the data collected by this program, Apple authorized service providers or a technical service personnel working at an Apple store will be able to easily determine whether the Mac is eligible for free repair. Meanwhile, Mac laptops and some Apple wired or wireless keyboards also feature Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI) that help determine whether products have been exposed to liquid. These indicators are strategically placed inside the device and change color when in contact with liquid. Placing a digital liquid detector in USB-C ports will make the technicians' job much easier.
It's unclear whether the program running in the background works on any Mac running the latest version of macOS, or only on Macs with M3 processors because it requires some additional hardware.
