Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro Max is set to feature a significant battery upgrade, according to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The new battery will boast greater energy density, potentially extending the device’s battery life if Apple maintains the current battery size.
As the iPhone 16 series moves into mass production ahead of its anticipated September launch, most speculation has focused on changes in screen sizes and camera enhancements. However, Kuo’s latest insights suggest a more radical innovation: a redesigned battery for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Kuo’s report indicates that the new battery will not only have increased energy density but will also be encased in stainless steel rather than the traditional aluminum. This material change could provide several benefits. Despite stainless steel’s lower efficiency in heat dissipation compared to aluminum, it offers superior strength and durability, potentially enhancing the overall protection for both the battery and the device.
In his detailed post on Medium, Kuo elaborates that this new casing design could facilitate easier battery removal, a move likely aimed at meeting upcoming European Union regulations. These regulations could mandate easier access to batteries in consumer electronics, emphasizing user-friendly repairability and sustainability.
While the enhanced energy density might suggest a longer battery life, Kuo notes that if Apple opts for a smaller battery size, the improvement in battery life might be neutralized. Nonetheless, the structural integrity and potential ease of maintenance present notable advantages.
Kuo emphasizes that this redesign will be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro Max initially, with plans to expand the stainless steel battery casing across the entire iPhone lineup starting with the iPhone 17 in 2025.
This development correlates with a leaked report from November 2023, which mentioned a similar J-shaped battery with a “frosted metal shell” for the iPhone 16 Pro. Additionally, a less credible rumor from February 2024 suggested a redesign for the iPhone 16 Plus’s battery, although it controversially claimed the redesign would reduce battery life.
Apple enthusiasts and tech watchers will be eagerly awaiting further details as the iPhone 16 Pro Max approaches its launch, hoping that the new battery design will indeed translate into a tangible improvement in battery performance and device durability.
