Apple is set to roll out an exciting new feature in this fall's iOS 18 update that will help users recover lost or corrupted photos and videos. Currently available for testing in the iOS 18 beta, this feature is part of a broader revamp of the Photos app and promises to be a game-changer for those who've experienced issues with their media files.

The new feature introduces a "Recovered" album, where users can find photos and videos that have been detected as lost or damaged. This detection will occur automatically on devices running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia. Once these files are identified, users will have the option to permanently delete them or restore them to their Photos library.

Apple explains that photos and videos can become lost or corrupted due to various reasons, such as database corruption or incomplete saves after taking a picture. The new recovery tool aims to address these issues seamlessly.

How to Use the New Recovery Feature on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia:

  1. Open Photos
  2. Tap Albums
  3. Scroll down and tap Recovered
  4. Use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock the album
  5. Tap the media you wish to restore
  6. Tap Permanently Delete or Restore to library

It's important to note that the "Recovered" album will only appear if there are lost or corrupted images on the device. If there are no such images, the album will not be visible.

Additional Features in the Updated Photos App

In addition to the media recovery tool, Apple has added several new features to enhance the Photos app experience in iOS 18. One notable addition is the Clean Up tool, which allows users to select and remove objects within an image using Apple's on-device AI software. This tool provides a simple way to edit and improve photos directly on the device.

With these updates, Apple continues to improve the functionality and user experience of its Photos app, making it easier for users to manage and protect their precious memories.
