With the recent changes in EU laws, Apple now allows third-party app stores, making it possible for iPhone users to sideload apps more easily. Thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which targets open app ecosystems, EU users can now bypass Apple's proprietary App Store for alternative sources like AltStore, a popular third-party app store for iOS devices.
AltStore, created by developer Riley Testut, offers a unique way to sideload apps on iPhones, including those outside the EU. Here’s a quick guide on how to install and use AltStore on your iPhone, whether you're in Europe or elsewhere.
Installing AltStore:
- Download AltServer on your Mac or PC.
- Enable Developer Mode on your iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Mode.
- Connect your iPhone via USB to your computer and run AltServer.
- Install AltStore from AltServer to your iPhone.
- Trust AltStore: Navigate to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, find the AltStore developer profile, and click Trust.
Once installed, you can sideload apps using AltStore, giving you access to a wide array of applications not available on the App Store. Keep in mind, you'll need to refresh sideloaded apps every seven days.
AltStore gives iPhone users more control and flexibility over their devices, making it an exciting development as Apple opens up its ecosystem.
