A factory in Hosur, India, which plays a significant role in Apple’s iPhone supply chain, is now the center of an investigation following a fire in its chemical storage area. Tata Electronics, which took over the factory from Pegatron, was producing critical components for iPhones when the incident occurred. The fire was reportedly brought under control, but not before it caused the temporary closure of the plant.
Local authorities have confirmed that two workers were hospitalized after being exposed to fumes from the blaze. Fortunately, both workers were discharged after receiving treatment, and there have been no reported fatalities. The fire has been fully extinguished, according to district administrative officer K.M. Sarayu. However, it’s expected that the plant will remain closed until at least the end of the month as investigations proceed.
Officials from Tata Electronics stated that they are conducting an internal investigation into the incident, aiming to establish the cause of the fire and prevent similar occurrences in the future. The company emphasized that employee safety is a top priority and that additional steps will be taken to safeguard its workers. In addition, a forensics team from Chennai, the state capital, is being called in to assist in the probe.
While the fire itself was contained to the chemical storage area, it is not yet clear if the blaze caused damage to any of the nearby buildings within the Tata factory complex. One of these neighboring facilities was slated to begin iPhone assembly operations by the end of 2024, as Apple continues to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond China.
Apple's Growing Presence in India
This fire comes at a crucial time as Apple increasingly relies on India as a key player in its global supply chain. The tech giant has been expanding its production base in India, along with other countries like Vietnam and Brazil, as part of a broader strategy to reduce dependency on Chinese factories. Tata Electronics has emerged as a key partner in this initiative, producing iPhone components at its Hosur facility, with plans to extend its role to full iPhone assembly.
This isn’t the first time a fire has disrupted Apple’s supply chain in India. In February 2023, a fire broke out at a Foxlink factory in Andhra Pradesh, a facility that was responsible for manufacturing iPhone charging cables. Although that incident did not result in any casualties, the damage was severe, causing part of the building to collapse and inflicting an estimated $12 million in losses.
Impact on iPhone Supply Chain
It remains uncertain how this latest fire will affect Apple’s production timelines, especially with the company ramping up for the holiday season. The Hosur factory plays an important role in Apple’s component supply, and any extended disruption could have ripple effects across the broader supply chain. Apple has not yet released a statement regarding the fire, and it is unclear whether any production schedules will be impacted.
The incident has also brought attention to safety protocols in factories that handle delicate and hazardous materials in India. Tata Electronics, now a major player in Apple's supply chain, will likely face scrutiny from both the government and Apple as it works to resolve the issue and ensure the plant is safe for reopening.
With iPhone demand surging and production expanding globally, the fire could serve as a critical moment in Apple’s ongoing efforts to streamline and diversify its manufacturing process.
