The Epic Games Store has officially launched for iPhone users in the European Union, marking a significant shift in mobile gaming. After a prolonged legal battle over payment practices and rival app storefronts, Epic Games has successfully introduced its digital storefront to the EU market.
The launch, which went live on Friday, allows users to download and play popular titles like Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys directly from the Epic Games Store. This move bypasses the traditional App Store route, giving players more options for accessing their favorite games.
Epic Games is also planning to expand its offerings, with promises of more games and apps coming to the storefront in the future. In addition to its own games, Epic is working to integrate other developers into the platform. The store is also set to appear on other independent mobile storefronts, such as AltStore PAL.
Currently, the Epic Games Store is exclusively available to EU users. Epic Games notes that Apple is still blocking access for iOS users outside of Europe, limiting their ability to download Fortnite and other Epic Games Store content.
Tim Sweeney, CEO and founder of Epic Games, celebrated the launch as a victory for both developers and consumers. "The tide is turning and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition," Sweeney said. He expressed gratitude to the European Commission for enabling the store’s launch and emphasized that while progress has been made, the fight for broader access and competition continues.
