In the latest U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study by J.D. Power, it’s clear that drivers have a favorite when it comes to in-car technology: Apple’s CarPlay. This popular feature allows seamless integration of iPhone services into the driving experience, making it a hit among users.

Infotainment Satisfaction Scores

Overall vehicle satisfaction has improved slightly, moving from 845 out of 1,000 in 2023 to 847 in 2024. However, infotainment systems still rank low in satisfaction, with an average score of 805. Drivers who use CarPlay rate their experience much higher, at an average of 840.

Why CarPlay Shines

The higher scores for CarPlay and Android Auto suggest that these systems are more user-friendly compared to the often complicated and frustrating factory-installed systems. Car owners report several issues with built-in infotainment:

  • Complexity: Many find the systems too difficult to use.
  • Poor Audio Experience: About 25% of users struggle with audio source switching.
  • Difficult Menus: 23% of users report issues with navigating menus.

Frank Hanley, J.D. Power's senior director of auto benchmarking, points out that these issues highlight a disconnect between what car manufacturers offer and what drivers actually need.

Future Updates for CarPlay

Apple is set to roll out several updates for CarPlay with iOS 18, including:

  • A new Siri interface for weather and sports queries.
  • Enhanced routing for Siri through media sources.
  • Refreshed Messages interface.
  • New wallpapers and accessibility features.

These updates aim to further enhance the user experience, potentially widening the satisfaction gap between CarPlay and traditional infotainment systems.

As car manufacturers continue to grapple with improving their systems, Apple’s CarPlay stands out as a user-friendly, reliable option that drivers love.
