Annually, China observes a tradition where significant resellers offer discounts on premium iPhone models, a practice that has continued with the iPhone 15 series. Despite perceptions of underperformance attributed to broader economic factors by Apple CEO Tim Cook, Bloomberg suggests that dwindling demand has compelled major resellers like JD.com and Alibaba's Tmall to reduce the iPhone 15 Pro Max price by $180. However, this perspective omits the historical context of seasonal price reductions in China, notably during the spring.
Contrary to assumptions of these discounts signaling poor sales, such price adjustments are a routine strategy for boosting sales during specific periods, such as the "618" shopping festival, when last year, discounts on the iPhone 14 Pro reached up to $210. Furthermore, the iPhone 14 series experienced similar markdowns, ranging between $103 and $118, indicating that the recent price cuts are within the norm rather than an anomaly due to lackluster demand.
While Apple's sales in China saw a 9% decrease in Q4 2023 compared to the previous year, amidst a general downturn in the smartphone market, Apple maintained its position as the top reseller for the quarter. This resilience underscores the importance of viewing the discounts not as a response to weak product reception but as part of a broader, cyclical retail strategy within the Chinese market.
