Apple is reportedly testing Autonomous Driving features on California roads , according to data from the California DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) via AppleInsider .
The California DMV requires companies to record key details such as the number of drivers and vehicles used for autonomous driving testing. The DMV states that Apple has 67 vehicles and 201 drivers registered to test its autonomous driving capabilities on public roads.
According to MacReports, Apple had 196 authorized testers in January 2023 and has since added five new drivers to test its Autonomous Driving features. DMV's data shows that Apple is not part of the list of self-driving testers testing self-driving fully autonomous cars, but the company is committed to testing self-driving cars with a driver.
When Will Apple Release the Car?
Apple reported a minor collision in the first quarter of 2023 where the vehicle's tire and rim contacted a curb and officials were not involved. Apple has reported a total of 16 crashes in California since registration . The rumors of the company, which is reported to be working on autonomous driving technology and even buying self-driving car startups, have been going on for years. Apple's vehicle layout includes a steering wheel and pedals, unlike previous reports that stated that the vehicle will not include traditional vehicle control input.
The vehicle will reportedly be powered by a custom Apple chip and have a price tag of under $100,000 , making it a luxury vehicle . It seems unlikely that Apple's car will be released before 2026 .
