In a significant recognition of excellence in design, the Apple Vision Pro has been awarded the highly coveted Black Pencil by the UK's Design and Art Direction (D&AD) awards. The ceremony, attended by Apple designer Alan Dye, celebrated this latest achievement in Apple's storied history of design innovation.
Apple has a history of receiving the Black Pencil award for its groundbreaking products, including the original iPhone, the iMac, and even its website. For 2024, the Apple Vision Pro has been honored with the Black Pencil for Digital Design and Connected Experiences, as well as a Graphite Pencil for Use of XR.
"We are honored that visionOS has been awarded the prestigious D&AD Black Pencil for Digital Design," said Alan Dye, Apple's Vice President of Human Interface Design, to design magazine Dezeen. "This new era of computing will redefine how we connect and create, and this award is a testament to the tight integration and care the design studio and engineering teams at Apple have invested into crafting a truly magical experience."
Dye emphasized the crucial role of design at Apple, noting, "At Apple, design plays such a central role in defining not only how our products look, but most critically, how they work. Our goal has always been to create intuitive user experiences that blur the lines between hardware and software and reimagine how users interact with technology."
He highlighted VisionOS as a prime example of these design principles, describing it as "an entirely new interface, driven by your eyes, hands, and voice, all designed to deliver spatial experiences that seamlessly blend digital content with the physical world."
D&AD's announcement praised the Apple Vision Pro and visionOS for unlocking new ways to interact with technology and the world through spatial computing. "Years in the making," the announcement stated, "the platform is full of technological breakthroughs made possible by the tight integration between design and engineering teams across hardware and software."
Apple's tradition of design excellence continues, with the entire design team being honored jointly in 2012. This latest accolade for the Apple Vision Pro underscores the company's ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in design.
