This development marks a significant shift from Apple's earlier commitment to using Qualcomm's 5G technology through 2027.

According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will debut its proprietary 5G modems in both a high-end and a low-end iPhone model in 2025. The models expected to feature these new modems include the upcoming iPhone SE, projected for release in the first quarter of 2025, and a new, slimmer iPhone 18 Pro model, anticipated around September 2025.

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to be a high-end flagship, positioned above the iPhone 16 Pro Max in Apple's lineup. It's noteworthy that Apple is introducing its new 5G modem technology to both ends of its product spectrum—the budget-friendly iPhone SE and the premium iPhone 18 Pro.

If Kuo's predictions hold true, this move suggests that the new Apple 5G modems will be comparable to Qualcomm's offerings, rather than featuring distinct enhancements. The decision to equip only two out of four iPhone models with the new modems might be influenced by ongoing contractual obligations with Qualcomm and production ramp-up challenges.

Apple's journey toward developing its own 5G modems began in 2019 with the acquisition of Intel's modem patents for $1 billion. Despite this, the company has faced hurdles in fully realizing its 5G technology. The shift to in-house modems represents a crucial step in Apple's strategy to control more of its hardware and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
