Apple has once again proven its commitment to environmental sustainability by securing the top spot in the 2024 Retailer Report Card from Toxic-Free Future. The report evaluated the environmental practices of retailers in the U.S. and Canada, focusing on efforts to eliminate hazardous chemicals and reduce plastic usage. Apple scored an impressive 84%, earning the only "A" grade among the companies assessed.

Apple’s Commitment to Safer Chemicals

Apple's high ranking is attributed to its stringent policies for using safer chemicals. The company was commended for its Full Material Disclosure program, which promotes transparency by collaborating with manufacturers to disclose material compositions. Additionally, Apple's ambitious goal to eliminate plastics from its product packaging by 2025 was highlighted as a key initiative.

The report also praised Apple’s alignment with Washington state's standards for safer chemical alternatives, which are now part of the company’s product design and development processes. Further demonstrating its leadership, Apple has funded the Safer Chemistry Investment Fund and sponsored chemical hazard assessments through ChemForward databases, aimed at identifying safer solvents and flame retardants.

Industry Leaders Setting an Example

Close behind Apple, Sephora scored 69%, followed by Walmart, Sam's Club, and Target with 65% each. "Apple, Sephora, Target, and Walmart are setting a strong standard," said report co-author Mike Schade. "With the holiday shopping season approaching, it's time for more retailers to follow their lead and ‘mind the store’."

Recognition from Environmental Agencies

Apple’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Apple the 2024 Safer Choice Partner of the Year Award, recognizing the company’s proactive screening and assessment of chemical use across its supply chain.

The Push for Cleaner Retail

As consumers become increasingly conscious of environmental impacts, Apple continues to lead by example, encouraging other retailers to adopt safer chemical practices. The efforts align with Apple's broader environmental goals, including becoming fully carbon-neutral by 2030.
