Vision Pro production is tough
According to the news of the Financial Times, which is based on people who have direct knowledge of the process, Apple had to change the production estimates of the Vision Pro glasses drastically due to the design complexity.
Introduced last month and expected to go on sale in the US early next year, the Vision Pro has a starting price tag of $3,499, which is more than three times the cost of Meta's most expensive Quest glasses. Aside from the high price, new reports show that Chinese Luxshare , the only manufacturer of Vision Pro , is preparing to produce less than 400,000 Vision Pro units in 2024. Meanwhile, Apple previously had a target of selling 1 million glasses in the first 12 months.
The FT also wrote that Apple has requested enough components for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year from two China-based suppliers , and plans for a more affordable version of the device have been withdrawn. It was stated that the biggest challenge in the production of Vision Pro is the production of micro OLED screens. The report underlines that Apple is not satisfied with the efficiency of error-free micro-OLEDs . However, the cut in Apple's 2024 production forecast also "disappointed" Luxshare, as Luxshare would increase its capacity to produce around 18 million units per year in the coming years.
