Since New York enacted its Right to Repair law in 2022, aimed at enhancing consumer access to repair resources, a new assessment highlights challenges in Apple's compliance efforts.

The report by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund evaluated repair options for 21 products covered under the law, including Apple's iPhone 15 and MacBook Pro. While the iPhone 15 earned an A grade for accessibility to repair manuals and parts, the MacBook Pro received a C, and the Apple Vision Pro failed to score.

Despite providing repair manuals and tools, Apple's customer service reportedly caused confusion by inaccurately denying self-repair options for the iPhone 15, contrary to the available resources. The report recommends further scrutiny by the New York Attorney General's office to ensure compliance among all manufacturers.

The legislation's limitations and exemptions, however, have drawn criticism, prompting calls for legislative updates to align New York's standards with more stringent counterparts in other states.
