Apple is set to end support for progressive web apps (PWAs) added to the home screen by iPhone users in the European Union, a move confirmed with the rollout of iOS 17.4 beta versions where such web apps became non-functional for EU users. This decision stems from challenges associated with complying with the new European Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates support for non-WebKit browsers, leading Apple to reevaluate its integration architecture.
With iOS 17.4, web apps added to the home screen will no longer operate as standalone services but will function merely as bookmarks, launching in a browser tab when accessed. Apple argues that allowing alternative browser engines in the EU poses significant security risks, including the potential for malicious web apps to access data from other apps or control the user’s camera, microphone, or location without consent.
Furthermore, Apple cites the low adoption rate of home screen web apps among users as an additional reason for discontinuing support. The company maintains that web apps built directly on the WebKit engine used by Safari align with the security and privacy model for native iOS apps. This change reflects Apple's effort to balance compliance with EU regulations while prioritizing user security and privacy.
