However, Apple's iPhone managed to buck the trend to some extent. Despite the overall market contraction, Apple's performance was notably more resilient, with iPhone sales experiencing only a slight decrease in the "low single digits." This is a testament to the enduring appeal of Apple's smartphones, which continue to attract buyers despite broader market challenges.

The enduring interest in Apple's products is further evidenced by the company's ability to continue gaining market share during this period. This growth comes amidst a backdrop of strong promotional efforts for the iPhone 15 series in the postpaid market, as well as sustained interest in older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, among cost-conscious consumers in the prepaid market.

Counterpoint Research highlights that the market's decline is particularly driven by struggles in the low-end segment and consumers delaying upgrades in anticipation of new products. Despite these challenges, Apple's strategy of maintaining a strong lineup of both new and older iPhone models has allowed it to outperform most brands and solidify its dominance in the US smartphone market.

"This strategic approach is allowing Apple to sustain steadiness in a market grappling with double-digit declines," further remarked Fieldhack. "Not only does this bode well for Apple's market share gains, but it also contributes to the expansion of the iOS installed base."

Additionally, Klaehne from Counterpoint Research anticipates a potential rebound in February, particularly with the availability of the Galaxy S24 series from Samsung.

The Galaxy S24 lineup was introduced by Samsung on January 17, 2024, with sales commencing on January 31.
