In its fourth annual fraud prevention analysis, Apple has highlighted its rigorous efforts to safeguard the App Store and its users from fraud and abuse. The company reported impressive numbers, showcasing the effectiveness of its preventive measures.
Blocking Fraudulent Transactions:
Apple revealed that it has prevented over $7 billion in fraudulent transactions on the App Store. This significant achievement underscores the company's commitment to maintaining a secure and trustworthy digital marketplace.
App Rejections and Terminations:
The tech giant blocked 375,000 apps over privacy violations and terminated 3.3 million accounts associated with fraud attempts. These efforts are part of Apple's stringent app review process designed to protect user data and privacy.
Developer Account Actions:
In 2023 alone, Apple terminated nearly 118,000 developer accounts, down from 428,000 the previous year. The decrease is attributed to improved mechanisms for preventing the creation of fraudulent accounts. Additionally, more than 91,000 developer enrollments were rejected due to fraud concerns, preventing the submission of problematic apps.
Fake Reviews and Ratings:
To maintain the integrity of app reviews, Apple blocked over 153 million fraudulent customer account creations and deactivated about 374 million accounts for fraud and abuse. In 2023, nearly 152 million fake app ratings were removed from the platform.
Preventing Pirated Apps:
In April 2024, Apple thwarted 3.8 million attempts to install pirated apps via the Developer Enterprise Program, which covered 47,000 different apps over the last year.
App Submission Rejections:
Apple's App Store approval process is robust, with 1.7 million app submissions rejected in 2023. Among these, over 248,000 were copycat apps or apps attempting to mislead users. Additionally, 375,000 apps were blocked for privacy violations, 38,000 for hidden or undocumented features, and over 40,000 for "bait-and-switch" activities, similar to the controversial tactics seen with Fortnite by Epic Games.
