In a continued push towards greater user repairability, Apple has made official replacement parts available for its latest iPhone 16 lineup. As of November 2024, users in the U.S. and select countries can now purchase components directly from Apple's Self-Service Repair Store, allowing them to fix their devices independently.

This initiative builds on Apple's commitment to repair accessibility, which started back in 2022. With comprehensive repair manuals released in September, users now have step-by-step instructions on how to tackle repairs themselves. The available parts include everything from batteries to displays, as well as more complex components like camera assemblies, speakers, and Face ID systems.

For those looking to replace their batteries, prices are set at $99 for the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models, while the Pro and Pro Max batteries cost $119. If you're replacing the display, expect to pay between $279 and $379, depending on the model. The repair kits, which include specialized tools to safely open and disassemble the devices, can be rented for $49 for a seven-day period.

Apple is also planning to enhance support for third-party replacement components in the future, which includes allowing the use of certified used Apple parts. However, the company advises that self-repairs are best suited for individuals with experience in handling delicate electronics, as the manuals emphasize proper safety measures, especially when dealing with sensitive parts like batteries.

By making official repair resources more accessible, Apple is not only promoting sustainability but also giving customers more control over their devices. This move aligns with the growing right-to-repair movement, which advocates for consumer access to repair parts and manuals.
