In a surprising move, Apple and OpenAI have joined forces to integrate OpenAI's ChatGPT directly into Apple's ecosystem. Unlike typical collaborations involving large sums of money, this partnership operates on a different currency: exposure.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, neither Apple nor OpenAI is exchanging cash. Instead, Apple will provide extensive exposure to OpenAI's ChatGPT across its vast user base. This arrangement benefits both parties by expanding the reach of ChatGPT to millions of potential users who are eager to explore AI functionalities within Apple's ecosystem.

While the current agreement is based solely on exposure, there is potential for it to evolve into a revenue-sharing model in the future. Apple, known for its lucrative partnerships such as the one with Google for search engine placement on iPhones, may explore similar monetization avenues with ChatGPT and other AI providers.

At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled its proprietary AI capabilities under the banner "Apple Intelligence," emphasizing on-device models and secure interactions through Apple Cloud Compute. However, Apple also introduced a new option allowing users to access OpenAI's ChatGPT via Siri and other tools, marking OpenAI as the launch partner for this integration.

Each interaction with ChatGPT requires user authorization, and OpenAI has assured users that no data is collected from these interactions without explicit consent. While basic access to ChatGPT through Apple's platforms is free, premium features are available to users who opt to connect their accounts for enhanced functionalities.

The integration of Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT is set to launch in beta during the fall, with a gradual rollout expected to follow.
