According to the latest data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), 17% of iPhone buyers in the June 2024 quarter were former Android users—the highest percentage in five years. However, this increase in switchers has not translated into robust sales for the iPhone 15, with older models like the iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE outperforming the latest release.

Why Are Older Models Winning Over Switchers?

Price sensitivity is a key factor driving this trend. Many Android users, accustomed to budget-friendly options, find older iPhone models more appealing due to their affordability. Despite being from previous years, these older models offer substantial value and technological improvements over many Android devices, making them an attractive entry point into the Apple ecosystem.

The older iPhones' value perception also plays a crucial role. Although not the latest, these models still offer advanced features that many new users find appealing. This strategy allows users to experience iOS without committing to the higher cost of the newest models, facilitating a smoother transition.

Additionally, deals and discounts on older iPhone models make them even more attractive to price-sensitive buyers. Trade-in programs and carrier promotions often make these models more accessible compared to the latest releases.

Long-Term Potential for Apple

While Apple's short-term margins may be affected by the preference for older models, the company may benefit in the long run. As new users become more familiar with iOS, they may eventually upgrade to newer, more advanced models, driving future sales.

CIRP comments, "With mobile carriers offering two-year phone contracts and rapid changes in phone screens, cameras, batteries, and network technology, Apple could rely on its installed base of owners to drive new iPhone sales." This shift indicates a current low point in the urgency of iPhone upgraders, but a potential for growth as these users evolve into more committed customers.
