Twitter's transition to X has led to yet another significant change: the Twitter app for Mac is no longer available on the Mac App Store. This surprising discovery was first reported by developer "Vedant" on X, revealing that the app has been quietly pulled from the store. AppleInsider confirmed this by using various search terms, including both "Twitter" and "X," and found no trace of the app. Attempts to access the app via its previously-used URL also indicate that it is unavailable.

The removal of the Twitter app for Mac signifies another step in Elon Musk's ongoing transformation of Twitter into X. Existing users who have already downloaded the app will still be able to use it on their Mac devices until X decides to cut off access. However, new users hoping to download the app will find themselves out of luck.

This move follows a series of changes initiated by Musk, who acquired Twitter in late 2022. One of the earlier significant changes was the termination of access for third-party client apps to use the Twitter service, which pushed users to rely solely on the official Twitter/X apps. The removal of the Mac app can be seen as a continuation of this trend, further consolidating user access to the platform.

For Mac users who still want to access X, there are a few alternatives available. The most straightforward option is to use a web browser to log into X, which provides full functionality and is continuously updated. Additionally, users with Apple Silicon Macs can download and use the iPad X app, thanks to Apple's cross-platform capabilities that allow iOS apps to run on macOS. This workaround offers a similar experience to the dedicated Mac app.

The disappearance of the Twitter app for Mac underscores the broader changes and uncertainties that have accompanied the rebranding of Twitter to X. As Musk continues to reshape the platform, users are adapting to new ways of accessing and interacting with their social media accounts.
