Since its launch in February 2024, the Apple Vision Pro has been making waves in the medical field, especially among surgeons who are using the device to enhance their procedures. Surgeons are praising the high-resolution images and ergonomic design of the Vision Pro, which have helped improve accuracy during operations and potentially prevent injuries that contribute to early retirement.

One of the biggest advocates for the Apple Vision Pro is Dr. Santiago Horgan, a renowned surgeon at UC San Diego’s Center for the Future of Surgery. In 2000, Horgan performed the first-ever robotically assisted gastric-bypass operation, but he believes the Apple Vision Pro marks an even greater revolution in the field of surgery. "This is the same level of revolution, but will impact more lives because of the access to it," he shared with Time magazine.

High Resolution Revolutionizing Surgery

Horgan had previously experimented with Microsoft’s HoloLens and Google Glass, but found that their image quality was insufficient for the precision required in surgery. The Apple Vision Pro’s superior resolution, however, was a gamechanger. In September 2023, Horgan and his team performed a paraesophageal hernia operation using a pre-release test version of the Vision Pro.

“We were all blown away: it was better than we even expected,” Horgan remarked. With the headset, he could access critical information—such as CT scans and endoscopic images—without interrupting the surgery to check separate monitors. This uninterrupted workflow reduces the patient’s time on the operating table and allows the surgeon to focus entirely on the task at hand.

Reducing Surgeon Discomfort and Early Retirement

The Vision Pro isn’t just improving patient outcomes; it’s also helping surgeons avoid physical strain. A 2022 study found that 20% of surgeons considered early retirement due to the discomfort of performing operations while relying on multiple monitors. Surgeons often have to shift their focus between screens, which can cause neck and back strain over time.

Christopher Longhurst, the Chief Clinical and Innovation Officer at UC San Diego Health, points out that the price of the Vision Pro, which starts at $3,500, is a non-issue in healthcare, where operating room monitors alone can cost between $20,000 and $30,000. “In healthcare, it’s like budget dust,” Longhurst explained. He also believes that the Apple Vision Pro will become a standard tool in operating rooms worldwide in the years to come.

Expanding the Scope of Medical Use

The Vision Pro is already making strides in 3D radiology imaging, allowing healthcare professionals to explore complex medical imaging in new ways. Longhurst predicts that Apple’s AR technology will soon become a core part of surgical procedures, enabling seamless access to vital data during operations.

Dr. Miguel Burch, head of the general surgery division at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, underscores how the Apple Vision Pro solves a significant problem in augmented reality (AR) surgery. Previously, different AR devices were tied to specific monitors and tools, forcing surgeons to switch between multiple devices. “With the Vision Pro, you can use it with anything that has a video feed,” Burch explains.

Burch also revealed that he had sustained three injuries from performing minimally invasive surgeries due to ergonomic challenges in traditional setups. He sees the Vision Pro as a solution to this “silent problem,” allowing surgeons to work longer and more comfortably.

A Global Gamechanger

A surgical assistant in the UK, who previously used Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, switched to the Apple Vision Pro in March 2024 and called it a “gamechanger.” Surgeons worldwide are beginning to see the immense potential of this device not just for precision surgery but also for enhancing the longevity of their careers.

The integration of Apple Vision Pro into surgical procedures marks a groundbreaking shift in the medical world, improving both patient outcomes and surgeon well-being. As technology continues to evolve, the Vision Pro is set to become an essential tool for healthcare professionals everywhere.
