MacPaw has announced that starting in April, Setapp will serve as an alternative app store for iPhone users in the EU, marking one of the first alternatives to Apple's App Store. A beta program is currently open for those eager to try it, and developers interested in the platform can apply through their website. This initiative is part of the changes implemented in the iOS 17.4 update to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act, offering alternative app marketplaces. Setapp, already known for providing a subscription-based service for Mac users, offers a curated collection of dozens of popular apps for a monthly fee of $9.99. With the iOS 17.4 update, it will become one of the alternatives to the iOS App Store for iPhone users in the EU.

MacPaw, alongside Epic Games, is among the first companies to announce plans to offer an alternative app marketplace for iPhones in the EU. Setapp subscribers on Mac will be able to access iOS applications via a QR code system. The beta version will feature carefully selected categories of apps including productivity and business tools, creative and design software, lifestyle and productivity apps, utility applications, and specialized professional tools.

Apple is expected to release the iOS 17.4 update on or before March 6th. The changes to the App Store will mainly affect users in the EU, with the update being less significant for countries outside the EU, including Turkey.
