MacPaw has unveiled its initiative to beta test Setapp Mobile, presenting a third-party app store alternative exclusively for EU users. This development marks a significant milestone for Setapp, which has been in the pipeline to introduce an alternative to Apple's App Store in the European Union. Now moving into the beta testing phase, the company is extending invitations to users to join a waitlist for the beta, anticipated to commence in April.
Oleksandr Kosovan, the CEO and Founder of MacPaw, expressed enthusiasm about pioneering a new direction for the software industry, aiming to enrich the app ecosystem with greater diversity and enhanced choices for consumers. He emphasized Setapp's commitment to offering meticulously curated software and tools designed to optimize workflow, spark creativity, and maximize impact, adhering to a philosophy of meaningful efficiency.
Traditionally, Setapp has provided a subscription service, priced at $9.99, granting access to a comprehensive suite of approximately 250 Mac applications. Although it has included a selection of iOS apps, these have been limited to companion apps for Mac software, necessitating downloads from Apple's App Store.
For its EU-exclusive beta test, MacPaw promises a selective array of applications, including popular choices from the Setapp catalog, covering a wide range of categories such as productivity, creativity, and specialized professional tools. While specific apps were not disclosed, the announcement highlights the breadth of offerings planned for the platform.
In addition to inviting EU users to the waitlist, MacPaw is calling on iOS developers to participate in Setapp, leveraging the new opportunities presented by the Digital Markets Act in Europe. This legislation enables the creation of independent iOS app stores within the EU, with Apple recently outlining how developers can establish and operate alternative platforms.
Despite criticism from competitors, Apple is set to implement these changes in compliance with EU regulations, coinciding with the release of iOS 17.4 by March 7, 2024. This move represents a significant shift in the app distribution landscape, potentially setting a precedent for further changes globally.
