Retro Gaming Boom: Emulators Hit the App Store

Apple's recent rule change opens the floodgates for emulators, bringing a wave of retro gaming options to iPhone users.

In a surprising move, Apple has reversed a long-standing rule, allowing emulators on the App Store. This change, effective since early April, has sparked a rush of emulator submissions, transforming the iPhone into a retro gaming powerhouse. Here’s a rundown of the emulators already available and those expected to launch soon.

Available Now

Delta:
Delta, one of the first to join the App Store, supports a range of Nintendo consoles including GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Color, Nintendo DS, NES, Super NES, and Nintendo 64. Exciting updates are on the horizon with an iPad version and Sega Genesis support in beta testing.

Gamma:
This emulator focuses solely on the original Sony PlayStation (PS1). It offers features like save states, cloud synchronization, hardware controller support, and controller skins. Gamma is free to download and has no in-app purchases, making it an attractive option for PS1 enthusiasts.

iMSX2:
iMSX2 lets users play classic MSX and MSX2 games on their iPhone. Priced at $1.99, it supports iOS 15.0 or later and is compatible with Apple Vision Pro and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 12.0 or later.

Coming Soon

Folium:
Currently supporting Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo DS, Folium is expanding to include PlayStation 1 and 2 as well as Sega Genesis. It’s currently in TestFlight testing, awaiting official App Store approval.

iDOS:
An emulator for DOS games and software, iDOS has faced challenges but continues to push for App Store inclusion. Initially removed, it has been resubmitted as iDOS 3 and remains hopeful despite setbacks.

Ignited:
Ignited offers a sleek UI and supports a variety of Nintendo and Sega consoles. Currently in TestFlight for patrons, it aims to soon be available on the App Store.

MAME4iOS:
Focused on arcade games, MAME4iOS has been submitted for App Store review. This emulator brings the excitement of arcade classics to mobile.

uoYabause:
A Sega Saturn emulator, uoYabause has been submitted for review. Fans are eagerly waiting for updates on its App Store status.

PPSSPP:
Specializing in Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) games, PPSSPP is already popular on PC and Android. While unofficial guides exist for iOS, official App Store availability is highly anticipated.
