In a significant step towards enhancing user security and simplifying the login process, Microsoft announced on May 2 that it is now supporting passkeys for all consumer accounts. This move allows users to log into their Microsoft services without the need for traditional passwords, instead using a passkey that integrates seamlessly with mobile devices' biometric features.

Passkeys, which are gaining traction among various tech companies, utilize a more secure authentication method. Users can now enable passkeys on their Microsoft accounts and sign in using either facial recognition with Face ID, fingerprint scanning with Touch ID, or even PINs and physical security keys. The initial authentication is done through a mobile device, after which users can access their accounts on multiple platforms.

This feature is currently available for signing into Microsoft apps and websites such as Microsoft 365 and Copilot through desktop and mobile browsers. Microsoft has also indicated that passkey support for its mobile apps will be rolled out in the forthcoming weeks.

Microsoft joins other technology leaders like Apple, Google, and PayPal in adopting passkeys, which have been recognized for over a year as a safer alternative to passwords. This initiative not only bolsters security but also offers a more convenient and streamlined user experience.
