Dr. Mara Einstein, a professor and self-proclaimed marketing critic, has accused Apple of deceptive marketing practices after buying an iPad with a discount and a $100 gift card offer. According to her TikTok video, which has garnered over 19,000 views, Einstein believed she was unfairly charged for the gift card despite the deal advertising it as free.

However, Dr. Einstein's concerns stem from a misunderstanding of the payment process. When Apple offers a discount on products along with a gift card, it typically involves two separate charges on the credit card. First, the iPad is charged at a discounted price. Second, a charge for the gift card appears, which offsets the discount to make the total amount paid equal to the original advertised price.

Einstein's TikTok video claimed she was defrauded by Apple, suggesting that the company was charging for what should have been a free gift card. This misconception led her to believe Apple was engaging in deceptive practices. However, upon reviewing her credit card statement, she would have seen that the total amount paid was indeed the discounted price plus the gift card amount, aligning perfectly with the advertised deal.

Apple's approach ensures that customers cannot take advantage of the promotion by redeeming the gift card and then returning the product. This separation of charges is a standard practice to prevent such scenarios. Dr. Einstein even noted that Apple explained this process to her when she called to complain, but she seemed to misinterpret the clarification.

In her follow-up commentary, Einstein continued to assert that the deal was a scam, despite evidence to the contrary. It appears her critique was based more on a misunderstanding of the transaction rather than an actual marketing deception by Apple.
