Why did Apple choose Sony?
Analyst Kuo said Sony's ToF sensors ( VCSEL ) have lower power consumption. This will result in the LiDAR scanner providing greater power efficiency on iPhone 15 models. Kuo said this could add to battery life or allow it to offer better performance with the same power consumption.
Kuo said the advanced LiDAR scanner could benefit from camera features such as night mode and autofocus, as well as the use of augmented reality ( AR ). The LiDAR scanner was first used on the 2020 iPhone 12 Pro models. The hardware is expected to remain exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models.
