The new iPhone 14 generation was presented during the “Far Out” event . Of course, the question arises: To what extent do the new models differ from their predecessors? We make the big comparison in the most important categories.
models
The iPhone 13 generation consists of four different models:
iPhone 13 mini (5.4″) iPhone 13 (6.1″) iPhone 13 Pro (6.1″) iPhone 13 Pro Max (6.7″)As was already speculated in advance, Apple has actually exchanged the 5.4-inch mini-iPhone for a 6.7-inch plus of the non-Pro devices. This results in the following iPhone 14 line-up:
iPhone 14 (6.1″) iPhone 14 Plus (6.7″) iPhone 14 Pro (6.1″) iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7″)design
At first glance, the design hasn't changed much: Both the 13 and 14 generations appear in the angular design that Apple (re)introduced with the iPhone 12. While Apple made the notch 20 percent smaller on all iPhone 13 models, it was completely replaced with a new “dynamic island” in the iPhone 14 Pro models. Here we explain what this is all about and what new features it will bring to the Pro models .
The non-Pro models still come with the notch at the top of the screen. Otherwise, the camera module on the back has grown. For more details on the different camera specs, read below.
Colours
The iPhone 14 (Plus) - just like the iPhone 13 - is available in five different colors (Blue, Purple, Midnight, North Star, (PRODUCT)RED), while the iPhone 13 is available in one additional color: Green. However, this color was only introduced after the official iPhone 13 keynote in spring 2022. Therefore, it is quite possible that Apple will announce another iPhone 14 color next spring.
On the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) , Apple is replacing the iPhone 13 Pro's Sierra Blue with a new dark purple. The 13 Pro devices are also available in green.
screen
Apple has been able to make the edges of the iPhone 14 (Pro) case slightly narrower than the iPhone 13 (Pro), making the display appear even larger. Unfortunately, only the Pro models still come with a Pro Motion display. As a premiere, Apple is now introducing an always-on display on the iPhone 14 (Pro). This allows users to read the most important information from the start screen without having to wake up the iPhone. However, Apple has come up with something special: In contrast to the already known always-on displays, the display does not go completely black, so that you can see the set background image throughout. According to Apple, however, this has no impact on battery life.

camera
Not much has changed in the basic camera equipment of the iPhone 14 models, which means that the Pro models come with a telephoto lens, wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle, as before, while the standard devices have to do without a telephoto lens . In addition, the LiDAR scanner is still reserved for the Pro models. Thanks to the larger sensor, the iPhone 14 Pro can now take better pictures under poor lighting conditions thanks to the new 48 MP sensor (in comparison: iPhone 13 Pro with a 12 MP sensor). Thanks to pixel binning, the iPhone 14 Pro still creates photos with a 12 MP resolution. If you want to shoot 48 MP photos, you have to use Apple's ProRAW format.
Compared to the iPhone 13, the camera of the iPhone 14 has only slightly improved: The main camera in the new 14 generation has improved aperture values (f/1.5 instead of f/1.6). Our practical tests will show whether the improved software leads to noticeably better images.
chip
A small sensation: Apple is only giving the new A16 chip to the iPhone 14 Pro models. So far, it has been customary for non-Pro devices to also have the current chip installed. While the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max enjoy the maximum performance of the A16 chip, the iPhone 14 and 14 Max feature a slightly revised A15 chip from the iPhone 13 generation.
battery pack
Apple was able to slightly improve the battery life in the iPhone 13 (Pro), the battery performance in the iPhone 14 line-up has increased again. Apple's website states that the video playback (Apple's unit of measurement for the battery capacity) could be improved by one hour. The first teardowns will have to show the mAh value of the batteries.
storage capacity
The iPhone 13 and 13 Mini were previously available with a storage capacity of 128, 256 or 512 GB, the 13 Pro models were also available with up to 1 TB of storage. Nothing has changed with the new iPhone 14 generation.
