Transition to Rivian

Jeff Alves, who served as Apple's Director of Hardware Engineering, has made a significant career move by joining Rivian, a prominent player in the electric vehicle market. During his tenure at Apple, Alves was a key figure in the battery engineering team, contributing to various projects, including the charging system for the original Apple Watch.

Contributions at Apple

Alves was deeply involved in the development of Apple's now-canceled car project, with his name appearing on related patents. His work at Apple spanned over 11 years, where he made notable contributions to several high-profile projects.

In a LinkedIn post, Alves reflected on his journey at Apple: "I joined Apple in 2013 with a leap of faith. I had no idea what I would be working on, but I was hoping for something fast-paced, and I got it! I contributed to shipping the first Apple Watch by leading the charging system development," he said. "This all happened within about 18 months of joining - lots of whiteboard sessions, numerous emails and meetings, more than a few invaluable lessons learned, and a couple of trips to China. I loved this time at Apple and the people I met!"

New Role at Rivian

At Rivian, Alves will assume the role of Senior Director of Battery Engineering. He will be working alongside former Apple colleagues Jonas Reinke and DJ Novotney, who joined Rivian earlier this year.

Speculations on Apple Car Revival

In May 2024, reports emerged suggesting that Apple might be in talks with Rivian about potentially reviving the Apple Car project, which was purportedly scrapped in February 2024. The addition of Alves to Rivian’s team fuels speculation about the collaboration between the two companies in the automotive sector.

Jeff Alves' move to Rivian marks a significant shift in his career, bringing his extensive expertise in hardware and battery engineering to the electric vehicle industry. His experience at Apple, especially in developing innovative battery solutions, will likely be a valuable asset to Rivian as it continues to expand its product lineup.
