August 28, 2024 — Apple has rolled out the third developer betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, packed with new features and enhancements. These updates bring powerful tools to the forefront, particularly for devices with Apple Intelligence capabilities, including the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and M1 or newer Macs.

Here’s everything you need to know about what’s new:

1. Remove Objects with the New Clean Up Tool in Photos

One of the standout features in this beta release is the Clean Up tool in the Photos app. Leveraging Apple’s on-device generative AI, this tool allows users to remove unwanted objects from images with just a tap, circle, or brush stroke.

Automatic Detection: The AI can automatically detect and highlight objects that might be unwanted in your photos. Manual Selection: For objects not automatically recognized, users can manually select them by circling or brushing, allowing for precise control over what gets removed. Seamless Editing: The AI seamlessly fills in the gaps left by removed objects, making it appear as though the object was never there. The edited images are clearly labeled, and users can easily revert to the original.

This tool is particularly useful for those looking to perfect their photos without the need for third-party editing apps.

2. AI-Powered Notification Summarization

Apple has expanded its notification summarization feature in this latest beta, which now extends beyond the default Mail and Messages apps to include a broader range of applications.

Customization: Users can choose which apps utilize notification summarization through a new setup screen or later via System Settings. Condensed Summaries: Notifications are boiled down to essential information, making it easier for users to quickly digest key details. Summaries can include recent messages, emails, news articles, and more. Display: These summaries are conveniently displayed on the Lock Screen, giving users at-a-glance information without needing to dive into individual apps.

This feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, enhances productivity by streamlining how users interact with their notifications.

3. App Installation on External Drives in macOS Sequoia

macOS Sequoia 15.1 introduces a significant new feature that allows users to install App Store applications directly onto an external drive.

For Large Apps: This setting is particularly beneficial for applications larger than a gigabyte, which can now be installed on an external drive if one is connected. This is a game-changer for users with limited internal storage. Simplified Installation: Additionally, Sequoia removes the previous requirement to have twice the app’s size in free space for installation, simplifying the process for users with smaller drives.

This update is a boon for Mac users looking to manage their storage more efficiently, especially on lower-capacity devices.

Other Enhancements:

Safari Highlights: macOS Sequoia introduces Safari Highlights, a feature that brings dynamic updates to your browsing experience. Math Notes in Calculator: The Calculator app now supports Math Notes, allowing users to jot down equations and calculations seamlessly.

As with previous beta releases, these new features underscore Apple’s commitment to enhancing user experience across its ecosystem. While these tools are currently available to developers, the general public will gain access when iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia are officially released in Fall 2024. Apple Intelligence features, however, are expected to roll out in a later update.
