To keep your AirPods happy, you should clean them regularly. Because in-ear headphones are susceptible to dirt and grime — straight from our ears. Dirty in-ear headphones not only look unappetizing, in the worst case they can even lead to inflammation in the ear canal. It is therefore particularly important that you clean your in-ear headphones regularly. This not only extends the life of your headphones, but also your ear canal remains intact.   Clean AirPods or in-ears properly: Here's how! Before you start, one thing is particularly important: never clean your AirPods or earbuds under running water. Most models are not waterproof. Penetrating water will damage your AirPods, so they need a careful, low-water cleaning. Before you can use the AirPods again, they must be completely dry. With silicone attachment or without? Depending on the design of your in-ears , the way you have to clean them also differs. Due to their design , some Apple headphones are particularly susceptible to dirt from the ears.   The AirPods 3 have small grilles that go directly into the ear canal and without a silicone attachment. Over time, and especially with daily use, dander and unsightly earwax collect in the grilles. Removing this dirt is actually a bit more difficult than expected. Attention: When cleaning, you should be careful not to damage the grids! Because behind it are the drivers of the headphones. If you damage these, you may experience problems with the sound of your AirPods.

Cleaning AirPods: The right equipment

So that you can clean your AirPods without damaging the earbuds, you should gather the following equipment:

Microfiber cloth: A microfiber cleaning cloth from home or the usual glasses cleaning cloth are sufficient. It is important that the cloth is washed before it is used. Cotton Swab: The most useful thing here is a reusable silicone cotton swab. The silicone cotton swab has the advantage that, firstly, you can easily clean it after use and reuse it, and secondly, it leaves no lint. Of course you can also use a conventional cotton swab. The best thing you can do is get one with a smooth surface. Paint brush or toothbrush: A thin brush with flexible bristles or a toothbrush will do. It can also be a paint brush, but then make sure that the brush is free of paint residue! Cleaning supplies: Alcohol is fine for disinfecting surfaces. But caution is required with this. Don't use it to clean your AirPods too often. According to Apple, isopropyl with 70 percent alcohol is best.

In fact, there are numerous AirPods cleaning kits on the web, but they do not always meet Apple's specifications. This means that caution should also be exercised with these cleaning tools. You have to decide for yourself whether you actually need such a kit. The above tools should work as well.

Clean surfaces and charging case

Now it's time for the in-ears. To make your AirPods shine again, start with the microfiber cloth. You moisten this slightly with the cleaning agent and then carefully clean the surfaces of the AirPods. And beware: Apple AirPods are not waterproof. Therefore, never spray directly on the TWS headphones , but always treat them indirectly with the cleaning agent, using a cloth or a cotton swab. However, you do not necessarily need a cleaning agent for cleaning. A little water is sufficient in most cases.

Don't forget the charging case

Of course, the charging case should not be forgotten when cleaning. You should also use the microfiber cloth to wipe this off properly on the outside; a dry brush can help on the inside. You should also not ignore the lid of the charging case. It is important that no liquid gets into the charging points. Therefore, never spray into the case, but clean it with a dry cotton swab or a thin brush.

If there is dirt in the connection, try to remove it with the brush. The Lightning connector is sensitive and should therefore be cleaned with care. Make sure the case is completely dry before packing your in-ears back in to charge.
