Bungie has delighted fans by bringing the final game in the classic Marathon trilogy, Marathon Infinity, to Steam. Released as a free title, it’s now available for both Mac and Windows PC users. This release marks the completion of Bungie’s effort to bring all three Marathon titles to modern platforms, with Infinity following the earlier re-releases of Marathon in May and Marathon 2 in July.
Marathon Infinity is a faithful re-release of the 1995 first-person shooter, preserved with its original data files but enhanced with modern features. These enhancements include widescreen HUD support, 3D filtering, positional audio, and 60+ fps interpolation, all running on the Aleph One game engine. The game immerses players in a universe where they must navigate ancient ruins and uncover the secrets of a lost clan, all while under the control of the rogue AI Durandal.
For those eager to dive back into this classic experience, the minimum system requirements are relatively light, needing only macOS High Sierra on a Mac with either Apple Silicon or an Intel Core M chip, 4GB of memory, and 100MB of storage.
This release is timely, as Bungie works on a spiritual reboot of the Marathon series, announced in May 2023. While fans can enjoy the classic games for now, they eagerly await more news on the upcoming modern retelling, which will be playable on the PlayStation 5. However, a release date for the new game has yet to be revealed.
