Apple has officially introduced its Tap to Pay on iPhone service to Canadian merchants, allowing businesses to accept contactless payments using their iPhones instead of traditional card readers. This rollout comes two years after the feature's initial launch in the United States.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, expressed excitement over the expansion: "Canadians increasingly rely on a variety of digital and contactless payment options, so we're excited to partner with payment platforms to offer merchants across Canada a private, secure, and easy-to-use capability that meets customers where they are."
Bailey highlighted the global appreciation for the versatility of Tap to Pay on iPhone, adding, "In a region as diverse as Canada's, we look forward to making it easy for businesses of any size to transact from coast to coast with just an iPhone."
The feature eliminates the need for separate, handheld devices that financial platforms previously provided to businesses for contactless payments. Now, payment platforms integrated with the new feature allow users to accept payments through an iOS app by simply holding their iPhone near the customer's device.
At launch, the first payment platforms to support Tap to Pay on iPhone in Canada include Adyen, Moneris, Stripe, and Square. Apple has announced that additional platforms such as Aurus and Chase Payment Solutions will adopt the feature in the coming months.
Moreover, Apple plans to introduce Tap to Pay on iPhone in Apple Stores across Canada later this year, further enhancing the payment options available to customers.
This Canadian rollout follows closely on the heels of Apple's launch of Tap to Pay on iPhone in Japan, marking another significant step in the global expansion of Apple’s contactless payment solutions.
