AT&T Takes 5G iPhones to the Next Level with Satellite Voice Calls and Broadband
AT&T is gearing up to enable satellite-based voice calls and broadband for iPhones equipped with 5G, covering every model from the iPhone 12 onward. This new development aims to bridge the connectivity gap in remote locations, bringing full voice and data services to areas where traditional cellular networks struggle.
Partnering with AST SpaceMobile, AT&T has been working on integrating satellite technology into its existing 5G network for the past six years. This collaboration has now progressed from a memorandum of understanding to a definitive commercial agreement, marking a significant step forward.
"Space-based direct-to-mobile technology is designed to provide customers connectivity by complementing and integrating with our existing mobile network," said Jeff McElfresh, AT&T's Chief Operating Officer.
Enhancing Connectivity and Tackling Latency
While Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite feature offers text messaging in emergencies, AT&T's upcoming service will enable full voice calls and data, significantly enhancing user capabilities. The primary challenge lies in overcoming the higher latency typical of satellite communications, but AT&T and AST SpaceMobile are committed to resolving these issues.
Expanding Access and Pushing Boundaries
This groundbreaking service aims to provide robust connectivity, ensuring that even the most isolated areas have access to reliable communication. The integration will allow AT&T to determine usage patterns, potentially managing costs associated with satellite data.
AT&T plans to launch five low Earth orbit satellites in the summer of 2024, with the agreement running through 2030, indicating a timeline for service rollout within these years.
Impact on Users
This move could drastically improve the way users experience mobile connectivity, reducing reliance on emergency-only satellite services and offering full communication capabilities in remote areas. It also sets the stage for increased competition and innovation in the mobile connectivity space.
By bringing satellite technology to everyday smartphones, AT&T is not only enhancing connectivity but also pushing the boundaries of what's possible in mobile communications.
