August 28, 2024 — Apple is reportedly doubling down on its partnership with LG Innotek for the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, relying solely on the company to supply tetraprism lenses, a critical component of the devices' enhanced camera systems. This follows the successful implementation of the 5x optical zoom feature in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which first introduced the tetraprism lens.

According to a report from The Elec, LG Innotek has secured an exclusive contract to provide the tetraprism lenses for the initial production run of the iPhone 16 Pro models. This initial stock is expected to represent over half of Apple's production of these devices by the end of 2024. Once the initial supply is sold, Apple plans to bring in additional suppliers, including Foxconn and Cowell, to meet ongoing demand and reduce production costs.

Apple's strategy to start with a single supplier before expanding to multiple sources may seem unconventional, but it underscores LG Innotek's ability to overcome production challenges that other firms, such as Sony and Jahwa, have reportedly struggled with. These challenges, particularly related to production yields, have limited other companies' ability to secure similar contracts with Apple.

While Jahwa continues to produce components for the folded zoom lens modules, LG Innotek's success in meeting Apple's stringent quality and production requirements has positioned it as the primary supplier for this key iPhone feature. The report suggests that once LG Innotek's lenses are in circulation, Apple will look to diversify its supply chain by involving Foxconn and Cowell, aiming to drive down costs and ensure steady production as demand increases.

It's worth noting that while The Elec is well-regarded for its reliable sources within the supply chain industry, its predictions about Apple's broader strategy should be taken with caution. Nonetheless, this development signals a significant step forward for Apple's camera technology, with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max set to continue the company's tradition of pushing the boundaries of mobile photography.
