Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max in the test: it brings less progress than it seems

The new 14-series iPhones went on sale on Friday, September 16, and we're already getting our first hands-on experience with the new generation. The top-of-the-range Max models have taken a more significant step forward, at least on paper, compared to last year's phones and compared to the "ordinary" 14s, than perhaps expected. But in practice it doesn't look like that, and the question arises whether it even makes sense to spend on the most expensive iPhones.

Make no mistake, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max we're currently testing is a really high-end smartphone. And yes, even other manufacturers have not shown any pace of innovation recently, for example, even the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has not changed much compared to the Z Fold 3 model.

But while in practice with Samsung's flexible display, we came to the opinion that those small and often subtle improvements have a more positive effect during use than we expected, the innovations of the new iPhone 14 Pro Max give us the exact opposite impression: often there are only " for effect" and actually in practice it does not fundamentally change anything.

With the dramatic price increase that came with this year's iPhones, the novelty may lose its appeal even for some of the most loyal fans. We dare to say that this year there will be significantly more people who simply install iOS 16 on their last year's iPhone and will continue to be satisfied without upgrading to new hardware than in previous years. The new cross-section in the display and the related animation are not enough as a fundamental innovation, most of the other innovations are related to the system itself and not to the fact that the phone would receive something new.

Those who buy the iPhone 14 Pro Max will probably be satisfied: it is difficult to find major faults with the phone, especially if we look at it through the lens of long-term users of Apple devices. But justifying the price of 36,990 crowns will not be easy. It is not for nothing that not only the new iPhone 14, but also last year's models 13 Pro and Pro Max are sold out at large retailers after the start of sales. While the "basic" 13s remain on sale, Apple only resells the Pro models. Anyone who buys last year's model will save significantly, and with iOS 16, they will basically get almost everything that is new.
