Apple is contemplating monetizing aspects of its Apple Intelligence service, considering a subscription model for expanded features and partnerships in artificial intelligence. Initially launched with free access on top-tier iPhone 15 models, Apple Intelligence has provided users with advanced AI capabilities.
According to Bloomberg, future iterations of Apple Intelligence could introduce paid subscriptions for enhanced functionalities beyond its current offerings. This move may align with or complement the existing iCloud+ service model.
In addition to potentially charging for advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities, Apple has secured agreements to earn a share from subscriptions to premium levels of OpenAI's ChatGPT and other third-party AI services. Users currently benefit from free access to OpenAI's GPT-4o technology through Apple Intelligence, ensuring privacy by preventing data use from Apple users' queries for training purposes.
Apple Intelligence users can already escalate queries to ChatGPT for specialized knowledge, such as medical or legal information, exceeding the capabilities of on-device models.
While discussions with other AI providers continue, the implementation timeline for these paid features remains uncertain. Apple is likely to roll out subscription options gradually as more users adopt devices compatible with Apple Intelligence, which is expected to expand in functionality over the coming years.
