Apple's reliance on India for iPhone manufacturing has seen a notable increase, with the country now assembling 14% of all iPhones globally. This represents a doubling of Indian production since last year, reaching a staggering $14 billion in value. As reported by Bloomberg, this growth signifies Apple's strategic move to diversify its manufacturing base beyond China.

In response to the growing workforce needed for this expansion, Apple and its suppliers are set to embark on a large-scale housing project. Plans include the development of over 78,000 housing units through a public/private partnership, involving major Apple suppliers like Foxconn, Tata, and Salcomp.

This initiative not only aims to accommodate the workers, particularly focusing on the needs of women employees who currently face long commutes, but also addresses security concerns associated with their current living conditions in rented homes.

Local reports from Business Standard indicate that Apple's manufacturing push has created 150,000 jobs in India over the past two and a half years alone. With an aim to manufacture 25% of all iPhones in India by 2028, Apple's commitment to expanding its footprint in India is clearer than ever.

This housing project is not Apple’s first venture into real estate for its employees. The company has previously invested $1.5 billion to alleviate housing issues in California, showcasing its continued commitment to supporting its workforce's living conditions globally.
