The App Store may soon provide AI-generated summaries of app reviews, making it easier for users to get a sense of an app's quality and functionality without scrolling through individual reviews. This new feature, first reported by 9to5Mac, appears to be part of Apple's ongoing expansion of Apple Intelligence, the generative AI suite recently introduced in iOS 18.1.
Apple’s AI-generated review summaries would compile common themes and sentiments from user reviews, presenting a concise overview on the app’s main page, alongside descriptions and screenshots. Updated in real-time as new reviews are added, these summaries aim to highlight feedback trends, allowing users to quickly decide if an app suits their needs. To ensure accuracy, developers will have the option to flag summaries that misrepresent feedback.
Currently, this feature is planned for select regions, though Apple hasn’t confirmed which countries will have early access. Apple’s use of in-house large language models (LLMs) to power these summaries would align with other AI-driven tools in iOS 18, such as Image Playground and Visual Intelligence, introduced in the recent iOS 18.2 developer beta. These tools are part of Project Greymatter, Apple’s internal AI initiative, tested under the codename Ajax LLM before Apple Intelligence’s public launch.
The addition of review summaries could streamline the App Store browsing experience, particularly for users interested in quickly gauging app quality and common user experiences. With AI increasingly central to Apple’s operating system updates, the review summary feature could be one of many similar tools aimed at simplifying and enriching the user experience.
