The 2021 and 2022 models of the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which are equipped with Apple's M-series chips, have a charging limitation due to the inherent constraints of USB-C technology. While these models are capable of achieving a faster charging rate of 140W, this is only possible when using the USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable supplied by Apple. The USB-C ports on these models are restricted to providing a maximum charging power of up to 100W.

In a significant advancement, the 2023 model of the 16-inch MacBook Pro introduces the ability to charge at the full capacity of 140W not only through the MagSafe connection but also via a USB-C port. This enhanced charging capability is achieved when the MacBook is paired with a power adapter that supports 140W or more and a 240W USB-C cable. Notably, Apple commenced the sale of a 240W USB-C cable in September, which is compatible with this updated charging feature.

It's important to highlight that this charging update is exclusive to the 16-inch MacBook Pro models. The 14-inch versions of the MacBook Pro are able to utilize fast charging with a 96W charger, a capacity that USB-C ports were already capable of supporting in the preceding models.

The introduction of the option to fast charge the 16-inch M3 MacBook Pro at 140W via USB-C presents MacBook Pro users with increased flexibility in how they charge their devices. However, it's crucial to note that the 240W cables, while facilitating higher charging speeds, are limited to USB 2.0 speeds for data transfer. This limitation is a trade-off that users might want to consider when opting for fast charging capabilities through USB-C.
